Culture of tobacco for crop of superior quality from shading
Experiments by the agricultural department show Sumatra tobacco of top quality can be grown in Connecticut under a nine foot cheese cloth shade. One third of an acre yielded 700 pounds cured, valuing $473.70, with a net profit over $900 per acre after shade costs. Compared to unshaded crops, shading increases value and profit, supporting a potential $6 to $7 million annual saving on foreign tobacco imports. This result follows soil surveys in the Connecticut valley and parallels Florida conditions. Merry Christmas for the poor in Boston as Salvation Army serves thousands at Mechanics Hall.
