The Philathes class of the Methodist Episcopal Church held a large attendance entertainment and fair at Colonial Hall on Thursday evening. Booths and tables, decorated stages, and a Victory concert by children drew praise. Volunteers Harriet Naylor, Lucy Clark, Roma Greenhalge, and others led booths with candy, cake, and refreshments. The program featured marches, recitations, songs, and a violin solo, celebrating patriotic and Christmas themes.
Mrs. Sarah J. Martin aged 57 died at her Brook street home Wednesday morning after a long illness described as a general breakdown. Born in Danvers she lived in Maynard from a young age and belonged to several local groups. She leaves husband Adelbert and two daughters Irene and Ina, plus two sisters and two brothers. Funeral held Friday at the Federated churches with solos by Florence Mann. interment at Glenwood cemetery.
Exercises conducted across all grades and the high school featured singing speaking and Christmas presents for pupils. A Christmas tree and Santa appeared in several grades. Schools closed Friday for Christmas holidays and will reopen Monday.
The Mizpah Rebekah lodge held its regular meeting and elected officers including N G Mrs. Smith V G Mary Leithead sec Mrs Annie Morris fin sec Lacy J Case treas Alien Howard trustee and Marion Jones pianist. Katherine Toomey attends priesthood ordination of a brother. The Dodgers social club plans a New Year’s Eve dancing party at Colonial hall with Stuart’s orchestra. Private Allen Howard son of Mr and Mrs Allen Howard Elm sr was honorably discharged from service. Casualty list from daily newspapers noted as a feature.
The grammar school teacher Miss Sophia Taylor was appointed principal to succeed the late Mrs Gardner. Public schools closed Tuesday afternoon in respect to Mrs Gardner. Several residents, including Miss Hazel Stone and Mrs Grace Newsham, were mentioned in local routines and visits.
Daniel McDougal received word last week of the sudden influenza death of his sister Mrs. Katie McDonald her husband and their son in Nova Scotia. Mrs. McDonald was well known here and in Maynard where she had worked previously.
George Blume captain of the West Acton bowling team started in the league at Maynard alleys. Blume is a high roller as fans watch the match against the A C H team, and the game ends with a one pin loss.
Walter Keyes of Hopkinton visits with Mr and Mrs Frank Leighton for Christmas. Pvt Thomas Reilley on a 10 day furlough from Lakewood NJ spends time with his parents Mr and Mrs Patrick Reilley. Edmund Cotter is home ill with influenza. James Adams and son Fletcher visit from Yall River with relatives here and in South Acton. Mrs Jos Brown and son Donald from Stevenson CT guests of Mr and Mrs J D Brown Central Street with Mr Brown to join them for the holidays.
Maynard lodge 1 O F held its annual officer election at the hall. Elected were Frank Archer V G, Robert Lester R S, Albert Randell F S, Ralph Case treasurer, and Samuel Parker trustee for three years. A collation followed under Oliver Trees. Private William Jones, just mustered out, spoke on army experiences. Guests from West Acton Concord and Natick attended.
Jack Graney of the Cleveland American League team shows a quirky fielding trick at a shipbuilding plant. He uses a tomato can to catch a hot ball fired from 40 feet, proving surprising reliability and coordination.
Hudson grieves for John H McCormack a popular resident who died Friday morning at Marlboro hospital after a brief pneumonia illness He survived by his sister Alice who had run his Main Street business He was a self made man active in St Michael's parish Hudson Board of Trade and local social life The funeral was held at St Michael's Church with mass and bearers named in attendance
Richard Wilson recovers from influenza amid local notes on Naval discharge for Joseph M Hopkins. Mrs Jerome B Gleason hosts influenza at home on Devens St. Foreign mail reports good health among soldiers overseas. Frank Fee involved in an incident with an explosion and fire. Alfred Rethehan, noted historical painter, died in Düsseldorf on December 11.
