Utility of Beekeeping in Crop Fertilization and Hive Behavior
Beekeeping aids fruit and seed crops by delivering nectar to hives, with a strong hive rising from 10 000 bees in February to 60 000 in May. A typical foraging trip yields about three tenths of a grain, requiring about 23 000 excursions for one pound of nectar. May daily gains average 3.3 pounds, sometimes over 11 pounds, loading up to 250 000 bees and visiting around 2.5 million flowers daily. Bees are blamed for crop damage, yet their tongues only extract nectar, not fruit, and they can be harmed by insecticides aimed at other species. An Italian incident in 1907 sprayed arsenate to kill pests, killing bees on olive trees.
