Concord churches schedule Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services including midnight masses at St. Bernard's and Our Lady Help of Christians, carols and pageants at Trinitarian Congregational, First Parish Unitarian, Evangelical Free Church, West Concord Union Church, and other observances. Parish choirs, candles, and special ensembles enhance the programs.
A lively Saturday event by a local company featured a successful reception and beet dinner. An amateur humorist entertained attendees and Ruth Garter acted as general organizer, with about 40 guests staying until midnight.
Fred C. Benson of Nashua, brother of Mrs. Harris Boyd, is honored with the Silver Beaver by the Daniel Webster Council for long service to scouting. The Plymouth State Teachers College meeting saw Max Silber preside. Duncan G. Jackson announced Benson's achievements and cited his roles as pack and district committeeman and organization chairman. Benson, a Cushman Baking Company manager and church leader, has guided 20 new scout units in Algonquin District since 1953.
A Littleton Lions Club regular supper met Monday at Domenica Restaurant with Vice President Diego Gerace presiding. Guests included Dist. Gov. Wendell F. Jones of Swampscott and Zone Chairman Rudolph W. Currier of Concord. Jones inspected the club's officers and records.
Concord Postmaster Ed ward J. McCaffrey reports Attorney General George Fingold has sent 30,000 Christmas cards this year. Fingold’s cards were forwarded from Lowell road in this town.
At Concord Co operative Bank annual meeting directors were elected for three year terms: Malcolm L. Donaldson Walter N How Laurence A Murray Thomas Peterson and Raymond D Willard. Officers elected: President Raymond D Willard Vice President Edward B Caiger Executive VP and Treasurer Gordon H Ogilvie Assistant Treasurer and Clerk Leslie F Nelson. Security committee directors John J Bent H Whittemore Brown William T Magoon John B Mutty and Ogilvie Finance committee Eliot R Howard Murray and Wisner I Park chosen.
Concord town manager Theodore M Nelson reports state commissioners discuss reconstruction of Old Bedford road and Main Street near Acton town line. A new sub station is connected and serving West Concord and industrial plants. Nelson notes receipt of Concord Carlisle regional school district budget and ibonds certification for collector and treasurer.
Concord campaign chairman Mrs. Douglas Richter leads next month's door to door solicitation at 1 Powers road. The Mothers March raises about 41 percent of county polio funds. Contact EM 9-3996. Carlisle leaders include Mrs. Edith Booth Mrs. Tudi Stauss Ann and Mrs. Thelma Macone. Littleton chairwoman is Mrs. Charles Reed of Warren street.
Mrs Colby Synnott hosts an old fashioned Christmas open house at Sudbury Road Concord for her debutante daughter Marcia. The 1725 house will glow with greens, include a sail bowl buffet and dancing in the studio. Student performers provide piano guitar and an hour of American and English folksongs. Marcia, a Concord Academy graduate, debuted at the Country Club ball last June and is now a Radcliffe College freshman.
Lincoln teacher David Webster plans flour tracks to locate Abe the baby boa constrictor missing from Smith Grammar School. The six foot snake, shipped from Tarpon Springs for $12, is watched by students and drew praise from Norman D. Harris of the Boston Museum of Science for fostering scientific curiosity.
Emerson Hospital reports births with several new additions on December 10 and later dates. A daughter to Everett Dexter and wife at 10 Assabet Avenue, a son to Charles House and wife at 1 Harrington Avenue, and a daughter for J. Allen Torrey and wife at Hildreth Jane all dated December 10. Calvin Farnsworth and spouse at 370 Pope Road welcomed a son on December 13, followed by a son for Benjamin Gangloff and wife at 9 Bedford Court on December 15.
Mr and Mrs Donald A Rundlette and their son of Chicago will visit many friends in the area during the Christmas holiday. Mr Rundlette is manager of Concord Woodworking Co s mid west plant.
Concord youth center launches with a record hop for students on Saturday December 28 from 8 to 11 p m in the Veterans building. Membership cards grant access to all teen center dances at reduced cost.
Concord male carolers prepared to spread holiday cheer on Monday December 23 7 30 to 9 30 with 18 voices from local church choirs and Concord Chorus. They will visit former sites such as Colonial Inn Emerson Hospital and First Parish Church and invite lists of shut ins.
Concord selectmen renewed numerous licenses including liquor licenses for Colonial Operating Company Willow Pond Kitchen Fairway Restaurant and extended hours for Fairway to 2 am and Concord Lodge of Elks to 1 am on January 1 1958. Automobile dealer Class 1 and victualler renewals covered Ragot Baggesen Battle Ground Restaurant Concord Lunch Fairway WAihel Gates General Radio Lyle O Hughes Howard Johnsons Charles Thoman Salvatore and Julia Palmer Anthony F Lotrines Willow Pond. Weekday amusement licenses issued to Concord Restaurant Inc Fairway Lyle O Hughes Angelos Salvatore and Julia Palmer Parks Restaurant Willow Pond and automatic amusement licenses to Slye O Hughes Willow Pond and Vey Dude Ranch. Taxi renewals went to Philip J Kelley Richard J Loftus and William H Towler.
The citizens council meeting set for Tuesday December 17 was postponed with no new date. It is likely the next gathering will occur in January as Warren Ties, the regional school architect, considers plans discussed at the previous session.
The Enterprise will go to press early next week due to the holiday. Copy and advertising must be in by Monday noon for the Tuesday printing to give employees Christmas Day off. Leave copy at the Enterprise box or at 4 Walden Street or P.O. Box 62.
The Concord High School French Club greets Athol High School with a Christmas carol program featuring a short French skit and refreshments. Officers include President Pete Funkhouser and Vice President Becky Brown, with committees led by Jean Himelhock and Joanne Rice.
Concord town manager reports two jurors named Ernest R. Spinney and Harold B. Bowers have been selected to serve at Cambridge Superior Court. Selectmen petition DPW for a hearing on speed zoning along Virginia road Old Bedford road Sandy Pond road Old road to Nine Acre corner Old Marlboro road and Williams road.
Concord fire officials publish a weekly alarm list detailing incidents including ambulance moves to General Hospital and Emerson Hospital, auto accident at Heaths Bridge and Sudbury Road, ambulance transfers from New Wellesley to Emerson, a dog in the river at Carr Road, and multiple still alarms.
The annual carol singing at the community Christmas tree in the Square will begin at 7 15 on December 24. Arthur Motter Lamb director of music at Middlesex will lead the event.
The Concord board continues actions to remove from its premises an issue involving George Denisevich and the lack of permission to build an addition to alter his restaurant on Lexington Road.
