The Concord Enterprise notes upcoming town matters and holiday events. Town meeting and annual elections are slated for early February with key articles due January 15 and closing dates toward the end of January. Guest speaker John W. McDevitt, superintendent of schools and former state deputy Knights of Columbus, addressed the Holy Name of St. Bernard’s church meeting. A reception followed the 8:15 mass with refreshments served and remarks by President Martin J.
The D A Conducts istmas Meeting at Odd Fellows hall. The session, led by Mrs. Jet O Grady grand regent, featured entertainment by Mrs. Emma Tombeno. Santa Claus handed out presents and refreshments were served to members.
Allan Rohan Crite displays three large black and white panels retelling the Nativity story from the Annunciation to the Finding of the Christ Child, alongside two gold and color print sets illustrating Matthew and Luke birth scenes. The show runs December 9 through January 5.
Concord High School football players, after the season, applied in the guidance office for part time jobs. The guidance director notes few business calls in six weeks and aims to publicize the issue, stressing the players are not in dire need but seek income.
West Concord Woman's Club meets Friday at 2 30 at West Concord Union Church. After the business session led by President Mrs Edgar A Rohan, Concord High School students present a Christmas program directed by Warren Loring and music supervisor Charles K Yeremian. Tea hostess is Mrs Harold Clarke.
St Bernard's church will conduct another novena in honor of St Jude Tuesday night at 7 30 followed by benediction of the most blessed sacrament.
Concord Lodge of Elks No 1479 hosts a large turkey night on December 21 at 8 PM at B P O E Hall Main Street. Twenty five gobblers to be given away with proceeds for Christmas charities plus dancing entertainment and refreshments for attendees.
Concord residents will receive from the Civil Defense Agency copies of the U.S. Government booklet Survival Under Atomic Attack. Each household will be given the simple guide by their district warden in sections 3A and 1A as part of the new emergency program.
West Concord Massachusetts two escapees from the Massachusetts Reformatory at West Concord were sentenced to three to five years in state prison. Roxbury resident George J Callahan 21 and Jack F Perkins 22 of Pittsfield escaped October 26 using a plank from the furniture shop to scale the wall. They had less than three months to serve before parole eligibility on indeterminate sentences for breaking and entering and were recaptured at Dedham two weeks later.
Concord Rainbow Girls at the Masonic Temple hosted an initiation with two new candidates admitted and two absent. Miss Connie Burk led the exercises. a December 2 report and December 27 plans were presented along with Piedmont Bowl football film and dancing afterward.
The Concord Visiting Nurse Association reports a well children conference will be held Wednesday December 20 after a one week postponement from yesterday.
Harold E. Orendorff resigns from the Concord executive secretary post after one and a half decades in the job and nine years as treasurer. The resignation, accepted with deep regret, leaves his chapter office. Mrs. Dora Moss is asked to assume the secretary role and will likely hold both positions while continuing as permanent secretary of the Concord Community Chest.
Concord Lions Club heard Jack Onslow of West Acton ex-manager of the Chicago White Sox discuss baseball at Howard Johnsons. He will manage Chattanooga in the Southern Association next year. Past President Rothwell N. MacRae organized the event with President Osman C. Chaffee presiding. Invited guests included Tommy Prendergast and Frank Curran, high school co captains and Coach Bernie Megin. Firemen respond to 175 alarms so far in 1950.
Concord high school varsity players who lack a copy of Minute-Man in Football by Rudy Currier may obtain a free copy. Interested players should call at his office located at 6 Main Street to arrange pickup.
Trinity Church holds its annual Christmas festival service for children and the parish. The event includes a nativity pageant depicting the Christ Child and the world’s lost light, produced by Mrs Gilbert Roddy and Mrs Richard Warren with helpers Fabian Friedman and others from the junior department.
The whist party committee of the Knights of Columbus announces a turkey dinner drawing on December 20, the Wednesday before Christmas, with the meal placed up for the prize.
Concord and West Concord host a Christmas party for younger children with Santa Claus, fundraiser by Howard Johnson ice cream. Merchants urged to stay open evenings from December 15 to 23. Band director Yeremian plans brass carols at centers on December 15 and 22. Christmas tree lighting began early.
Concord plans an experimental civil defense central communications control center in the Veterans Building. The nerve center will coordinate information, issue orders, and manage actions for evacuations and city response in emergencies. Six operators are needed, with expansion possible to eleven. power will be provided by a Civil Sense Agency facility.
