The Enterprise shares festive plans in Lincoln Sudbury Maynard and Acton with Christmas messages. Santa letters arrive from local children including Kim Maynard and prize draws announced for readers delivering holiday notes to the Nason Street office.
Acton town employees were told at a town hall meeting that the personnel board finance committee and board of selectmen favor a five percent across the board salary increase to be proposed at the annual town meeting. The raise excludes school department personnel. All town departments were represented at the meeting called by Clyde J. Horne.
Town of Acton earns top state prize in 6 000 to 10 000 population category for its warrant Articles for the 1962 Annual Town Meeting with the Finance Committee Recommendations. The selection praises clarity of recommendations, itemized expenditures, reserve fund notes, and explanations for major appropriations.
Concord postoffice extends hours for pre Christmas season with special weekend windows. Acting Postmaster Steinmann notes changes for Dec 15 through Dec 24 including Saturday and Sunday openings and extended weekday hours. Rules for packing, tape, and cord cited along with parcel post size and weight limits. Edward J. McCaffrey advises on additional window service at Concord post office. No money orders sold Sunday.
The Women’s parish association hosts a Christmas tea Monday with bell ringers from Medfield State Hospital entertaining and Mrs Arnold Schumacher directing the church choir. Sunday features the annual church school Christmas tree service at 3 30 p m followed by refreshments. Rev Arthur B Jellis preaches at 11 a m on “Taking Time to Think.” Wednesday chapel discusses “Candlelight of Christmas.”
Former town report committee member and current finance subcommittee chair proposes a bid for the Concord school board. A Harvard AB in English literature graduate and WWII Eighth Air Force pilot, he has lived in Concord since 1949 and worked for Houghton Mifflin in Boston since 1947. He cites public education advocacy and past committee service as the basis for his candidacy.
Ellen Frances Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Lee of 87 Barretts Mill Road, is engaged to Vincent J. Simarano, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Simarano of Marlborough. Ellen attended Framingham State College and is at BU School of Education. Vincent studied at the New England Conservatory and BU School of Business, and served in the Army. A January wedding is planned.

Concord Gilbert M. Roddy of Monument Street, president of Boston Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Co., named a life member of MIT Corp. since 1958. A MIT graduate of 1938, he is a former Alumni Association president and past Emerson Hospital president, trustee of Wheaton College, director at N.E. Merchants Bank and American Mutual Re-insurance, with ties to F.M. Ace Co. and the Sanborn firm.
Acton selectmen met Tuesday to discuss zoning laws and the highway budget. Allen Nelson reported on street budgets while the Acton Community Center Choral Art Society prepares Handel on Sunday. State approval forwarded for license. Budget discussions target the March 1963 town meeting.
Rehearsals for the Sunday pageant take place Saturday morning at Trinity Church directed by Mrs. Howard Kent. Rev. H James Graham will preach at 9 15 and 11 a m on Sunday. Church school classes resume January 6. Holy Communion is at 8 a m.
Concord residents await Santa Claus arrival via helicopter at Emerson Playground this Saturday at 10 a.m. Local officials greet him with A. N. Rodday of Victory Lee Stables coordinating, while downtown stores stay open evenings through Christmas.
Acton health officials announce a Sabin oral polio clinic for school children lacking Type 1 vaccination to be held in January with date to be announced through schools. A preschool clinic for missed Type 1 shots and an adult session later in January with a small fee are planned. Type 2 dose is scheduled for March.
The Acton Parish Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church met at R. C. Copeland’s home. Mrs. Franklin H. Charter and William R. Rawhtser were named to the planning committee replacing Walter Rodgers who moves to New York and Neil H. Borden Jr. who resigned. The religious education panel met at Rodgers’ home to discuss Christmas plans and school procedures. The junior youth group will host a bowling party at Acton Bowlarama tomorrow at 3 15 p.m. December greeters are Raymond Darling and Mrs. Rawhtser, with coffee hour last Sunday led by Mr. and Mrs. Chester H. Moody.
Concord selectman John B Finigan is a candidate for the presidency of the Middlesex County Selectmen Association. The association held a Christmas party last night at Arlington Town Hall described as a ladies night.
Concord and Carlisle vote on extending the regional school district to include Grades 7 12 and expanding the Carlisle and Concord school committees. The session lasting four hours debated building plans funding and timing with a July 1 1964 effective date and possible sale or lease of school buildings to the district.
