Four golfers tied for net honors in the weekly 12 hole event at the country club links. Notable scores include Hepburn 48 39 and Tratt 48 39. Piper 57 39. Raymond 51 41. Hill 53 41. Cod ding 55 46. Borden 58 46. Smith 59 47.
Nearly 200 members and guests gathered to honor Rev Otto T Rafos as he leaves Concord after five years to become pastor at Highland Congregational Somerville. Speakers included Rev B A Lahgrand Roxbury Free Church and Rev Burton L Goddard Carlisle Congregational.

Games run Monday to Friday show Sleepy Hollow losing 6-5 to Concord Hubbardville with Hubbardville’s Mara and Johnson on the mound. East Quarter beat Herronville 7-4. Woody Blocher pitched Sleepy Hollow to a 10-0 win over Depot. Rain and darkness canceled Thursday and Friday games. Sleepy Adgel beat Herronville 6-3 with Sammy Hosmer on the mound. Schedule notes include Fast Quarter vs Sleepy Hollow and Hubbardville vs Maramen as second-half winds down.
Stanley Wasiuk wins the Maynard Country Club 1940 season championship by defeating Jak Johnston in the finals held last Sunday. The ladies club championship remains undecided and is expected to be decided next week. A social dance with a weenie roast at the club Saturday night drew good attendance.
A public demonstration of a new aerial ladder at the municipal yard drew hundreds. Gerald H Kinan, on duty at the Central station, was struck by a passing car while directing traffic and taken to Emergon Hospital with fractures and bruises.
John F. Sheehan 21 of Arlington was identified as the Sudbury road victim found near Nine Acre Corner on Route 117. State Police investigated with Goriansky and others, a possible car throw or crash, no passenger in the car. The body was released to Eugene Sheehan of South Boston pending further inquiry.
Mrs Sara Money French of Massachusetts avenue recently returned from a trip to the Midwest. While in the law office she had the pleasure of heading some tasks and will deliver on five items.
Concord Chapter of the American Red Cross displays relief efforts at 21 Main Street to educate the public about aid to Europe. The window features wool dresses, bathrobes, sweaters, caps, mittens, layettes, and quilts made by West Concord Gift Scouts and Junior Red Cross groups, with surgical dressings and hospital garments also produced.
Concord state police and officers tracked two inmates from the Billerica House of Corrections after a Thursday escape. Charles Robinson a former Worcester Academy captain helped tackle and capture Henry H. Clark of Ayer within hours. Richard H. Lille of Natick was later caught in Sherburne asleep in a stolen car.
Aliens aged 14 and older must register at the local post office on Main Street as part of a nationwide program. Fingerprinting is required and registration runs through December 26. Citizens with first citizenship papers must register. registration is free and officials will assist.
Three women were injured in a morning automobile collision at Walden Street and the Concord Turnpike in Concord. Rev Samuel A Walker Gorham Maine drove one car with his wife Mrs Dla Welker and Mrs Louise Hammond of Milford New Hampshire in the other car were Charles A Smith Jr and his wife Mrs Ruth Smith of Millis. The two drivers were unhurt and the three women were taken to Emerson Hospital in Concord by ambulance for minor injuries. Patrolman William L McGarthy investigated.
Peter Comins son of Danforth W Comins residing at 8 Lowell Road Concord was fatally injured Monday forenoon. He was riding on a towed chassis near the Monument over the Concord river bridge when the tow rope snapped. He was thrown against an electric light pole and died hours later at Emerson Hospital from head injuries. He was a TORAH Academy student and is survived by his father mother two sisters and two brothers. Funeral was at First Parish Church Wednesday at 11 oclock.
Information posted on alien registration states the process began yesterday nationwide and runs until December. Aliens 14 years and older must be fingerprinted and registered at West Concord or Concord post office, while those under 14 must register. Citizens are urged to act promptly to avoid delays.
Marlboro hospital treated three people after a Hudson road crash in North Sudbury. Clifford Woodruff 21 of Crawford Maine suffered a near ear severing laceration and facial injuries. Driver De Desta 45 of Sudbury and his wife Annie Jarman also received lacerations. Jarman was held overnight for treatment and police questioned him.
South Acton residents Mr. and Mrs. Theron Lowden of Mai Street returned Sunday after a two week vacation in Gloucester. Dr. and Mrs. Orma L Clark and family have returned from a three week visit in the Maine woods.
Superintendent Paul Larrabee announces the Concord public schools will open Monday September 9 for the 1940 41 year. The high school runs 8 30 to 1 45 with elementary hours 9 to 12 and 1 16 to 3 18, with age and vaccination requirements for entry and a lengthy list of staff including principals and teachers across three schools.
In the 10th Middlesex Representative district a notable birth was reported as twin daughters arrived to Representative and Mrs. Avery Steele of Boxboro at New England Baptist Hospital. Mother and daughters are doing well. Representative Steele is a candidate for reelection.
Candidate Lewis A Adamasane A announces his candidacy for Middlesex County Commission. He pledges to improve county administration, cut costs, and keep taxes low while serving in the public interest and supporting local civic groups. He notes long involvement with the Men's Club and Minute Men and seeks support for the September primaries.
