Paving Clause Sparks Friction Over Franchise Conditions
At a Friday meeting the Acton and Maynard Street franchise was not approved unless a paving clause is accepted by the railroad commission. The clause requires six inch granite paving between tracks on Nason Street and 18 inches on each side from Main to Summer, about 500 to 600 feet. The railroad company opposes the clause citing cost and rail needs, while town officials cite road conditions and public criticism. If no compromise is reached, construction plans on the new road face delay and possible redirection toward Acton.
