Suomi A C edged the Gas House Gang 14 12 in a wild battle last Thursday as visiting clubs tested locals at Vose Field. Ledgard umpired with sharp eyes while Gas House Gang plans a rematch with Clubbers on Vose Field tonight and a future clash with Suomi A C next Sunday.
The American Legion band led by James J Mans will give a community concert Friday at 8 o clock in Monument Square Hudson and surrounding residents enjoyed past performances. The event is part of the Weat Village Improvement Sc old Home Day program with the band also planned to play at Salisbury and depart Concord by bus in the morning.
Acton Garden Club met at the home of Mrs Ray on Nagog Hill Road on August 7. Speakers and awards were announced for the upcoming Acton Fair in September, with Mrs Benjamin de Townsend leading a quiz and Mrs Charles Davis receiving a knowledge prize.
Acton J Henry Engman and Mrs ristofferson hosted 12 guests for an evening of bridge on August 4 with Miss Edwina Summit of New Jersey and Ances Cummings of Washington County as guests of honor. Mrs Kittier hosted a second gathering the same week for Mr Walter Stevens and Eleanor, who were vacationing in London Connecticut. A surprise party for Miss Baylor occurred at her home on ee street with Miss Taylor and Mrs Arthur Freese in attendance. The Acton Center Fire Department hosted an event with wives and friends at Fort Pond featuring swimming singing and socializing. Guests included Albert Andrews and Mrs s grandmother Mrs Prima of Windsor Connecticut with Joseph T Fitzgibbon of Maine entertaining two nieces and Gene.
A Boston newspaper fragment shows a cartoon captioned Your Neighbor. It mentions Everett N and Mrs Narii at a lounge on Central Street and Roe of Arlington Street taking a week’s vacation with Ny in their cottage near Hudson and Ars. Clouett is also referenced.
Norma Greenwood Fox daughter of Dartelle and Mary Fox of White Avenue wed Walter Sterkweather Lufkin son of Rynear and Mrs Lufkin of Fitchburg Turnpike at First Parish Church Concord. The Rev William Lewis officiated at four oclock. Guests included maid of honor Mrs Alfred N Lufkin and best man Alfred N Lufkin. After a reception held at the bride’s parents home the couple planned a Rangeley Lakes Maine honeymoon and will reside on Powder Mill Road after September 1. The bride attended Concord High School and worked in Lehman Hall office. the groom assists his father in business.
Lincoln funeral services for Herbert Marshall Gerrish of State Road were held at his late home with Reverend Frank W. become minister of Sais. Gerrish, a well known Concord cattle dealer who had lived in Lincoln 12 years, previously owned a garage in Malden and Melrose for 21 years. Born September 21 1888 in Maine he was in his 52nd year. He leaves his wife Mary F. Gerrish, a son Kenneth Walker Gerrish a sergeant in Company H 182nd Infantry Concord, and a daughter Winifred Helene Gerrish, president of the Ladies Ten Pin Bowling League in Concord.
In their first night game of the season Whitney Club Otis M. Whitney of Woonsocket lost 8 to 2 to Marquette at the latter’s park last Thursday night. Jim Tompkins started for Whitney and was shelled in the third inning while Sam Hosmer gave up seven runs. Georgie John halted the rally as Nortons of Worcester were noted as the state semi pro champions this year. The lineup included Bill McCarthy, Harry Cook, Bob Mara, Richie Lonhlin, Herbie Symes, Johnson, Hosmer, Stevie Flannery, and Willie Erisman.
Concord Edward J L Craig of 5 Thoreau street, long time jail officer at East Cambridge Jail and House of Correction, was promoted to Deputy Master effective August 19. He and his family will relocate to Cambridge after early September.
Miss Sylvia Virginia Numelin of 33 Butler avenue Maynard received her master’s degree of education at the closing exercises of the Boston University summer school last Saturday. Numelin is well known to Concord and Maynard folks and teaches at Jason’s High School New Hamp t. On Sunday evening at Nashoba Inn Joseph Dee old street hosted a party of ends and relatives in occasion.
The Board of Selectmen released a list of election officers serving from September 1, 1940 to September 1, 1941 for Precinct One and Precinct 1 Wo. Warden appointments, deputy wardens, clerks, inspectors, deputy inspectors and tellers include Arthur A. Magurn, Margaret F. Collins, Cyrus Hosmer, Romeo DiCicco, and others with names like Charles E. Comeau, John J. Sullivan, Sarah W. Derby, Evelina G. Anderson, and Catherine G. Wallace.
Miss Pauline L Heyliger daughter of Mr and Mrs Theodore G Heyliger Cambridge Turnpike became the bride of Mark Mara 3rd son of Mrs Mary A Mara and the late Mark Mara Bedford Street The Rev Walter A Quigley pastor of St Bernard’s church officiated at 8 pm ceremony attended by close friends and relatives Miss Mary A Mara sister of the groom was maid of honor Edward Mara of Boston brother of the groom was best man A reception followed at the bride’s home The couple will reside in Concord Both attended Concord High School and Mr Mara is in the contract painting business in Concord.
In an intertown league game at Rideout playground Macones defeated Allen Chair 11 to 7 as Ken Strayton pitched. Palmer’s edged Midway 8 to 2 to tighten second half title chances with three wins in four. Benny Mariannd spun another strong outing for the Chairmen in a 10 to 8 victory over Midway as the circuit braces for a late-season world series between half champions.
The Board of Registrars announces two registration dates for the September primaries in Concord. August 19 at the Harvey Wheeler School from 7 to 9 pm, and August 28 at the Town House from 12 noon to 10 pm. These are the only Concord registration dates before the primaries.
First Army units in Fre Ogdensburg N Y report that Concords Company H will mobilize September 16 to Cape Bourne for a year of training. The 26th Division, commanded from Boston, plans to send 10 000 to 15 000 draftees to Bourne pending Congress action. Guardsmen to return August 24, then three weeks at home before mobilization.
Concord professor Timothy Taracouzio a former Russian Imperial Air Force member and Harvard law instructor will speak at the Colonial Inn Rotary luncheon Thursday noon. Residing in Bedford he was last fall guest of the Young Republicans.
West Concord patrolman Hollis C Sam Beattie of the state police barracks will join the Massachusetts State Police pistol team this Thursday for the national pistol shoot in Teanuck New Jersey opening Friday. After Sundays match Beattie and the team travel to New Haven Connecticut for another special match.
Concord District Court Associate Judge Edward B Caiger placed 19 year old Bernard of Leomaster on probation until November after he and accomplice were arrested early Tuesday morning by Officer Sergeant Marshal Witherell and John T Foster for attempting to steal a car along Cadge Turnpike.
Funeral services for the late Mrs Anne Elizabeth Gordon Sewell, 78, longtime Concord resident, were held at her Monument Street home with burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. She died last Saturday night after a lengthy illness. A brother, Lindell Gordon of St Louis, survived with a nephew, a niece and several grandnieces. he flew in from California to manage arrangements.
Concord resident R Howe 45 Main street retired organist and choirmaster of St Bernard's Church died at home following a prolonged illness Born August 18 1875 in Westboro he taught piano in Worcester for 30 years and led music at St John's Worcester before serving St Bernard's 1936 1989 He leaves a sister Mrs Alvert B Black and an aunt Miss Harriet Pierce The funeral from his home Wednesday at 2 pm with Rev Charles Russell Peck officiating Interment in Hope Cemetery Worcester conducted by Rev Daniel Alexander
Weekend turnout was light as many players were away on vacation. Burleigh L Pratt won the best 12 holes with a 49 40 on a 2-3 handicap. Mr and Mrs Henry Francis Chamberlin marked their first anniversary last Sunday. Mrs Chamberlin. formerly Edith Spiers, Red Cross nurse, wed on August 11, 1939 at Our Lady Help of Christians Church West Concord with Rev Fr Ernest L Ford officiating. They now reside in North Acton.
Charlie Spear is enjoying his annual vacation away from his Mi Cam duties. The note highlights his time off and return plan, reflecting routine staff scheduling during a standard break. Spear remains associated with Mi Cam as he steps away for rest and travel.
Concord in a pretty wedding at St Peter's Church Wienna last Saturday at four. Frances Walker daughter of Mr and Mrs George R Walker married Frederick M Schaefer son of Mr and Mrs Frederic Schaefer of Pittsburgh and Vianna. Reverend Duncan Brown of Chicago and Norwegian minister Wilhelm Morganustierne officiated. The bride’s sister Barbara was maid of honor and bridesmaids included Jane Shaefer Katherine Schaefer Nancy McNeil Judith Moir. Best man Clement B Gile. ushers Nathaniel Davis William Read Baldwin Walker Gordon Wheeler Thomas Prout James Hunter Frederik Tovey. Reception at the bride's summer home. After a wedding trip they will reside in Pittsburgh.
Concord Governor Weyerett appoints Michael J Dee as chairman of the civilian defense committee to organize local groups aiding the governor if the national guard is mobilized. Multiple subcommittees and officers named including Goodwin Swaim Dolan and Wardwell with enlistment and public buildings and transportation roles. Winthrop L Brown of Oak Road attended Saturday Devers picnic wedding in Duxbury.
The Eastern Star opens Fall activities on Wednesday September 1 at Masonic Temple with Mrs Eeith Bailey serving as presiding matron. Mrs Johanna Kelley of 9 Potter Street left Tuesday by automobile for Millburn New Jersey with her friend Mrs Marie Harrison. George Kakes of Bedford Street is in New York on vacation. The Guisti family has moved into 6 Love Lane from 9 Davis Court.
Concord's National Guard unit Company H of the 182nd Infantry completed a week of training at Transform Field Potsdam New York under Captain William A Hagerty with 1st Lt John A Hutchinson and 2nd Lt Samuel Melise. The 182nd is part of the 81st Brigade in the 26th Division under Major General Eckfeldt.
