A 20 year old inmate from Charlestown admitted starting a dormitory barn fire at the West Concept Reformatory. The blaze on July 22 caused about 10800 dollars in damage to hay and property. Officials report he studied the barn for a week and lit the match, facing a 35 day observation after arraignment in Concord. The inmate was serving a three year arson term and was due for October discharge.
Concords Company H leaves by truck Friday morning for Camp Drum New York after breakfast at the State Armory. 19 vehicles join the second battalion convoy via Routes 3 and 128, passing Tyngsboro Keene N H Rutland Vt and Crown Point N Y to bivouac for three days with drills and inspections. The Concord Minutemen will return August 17 about noon.
Concord residents Mrs. William Kraushaar and Mrs. Julian Tolman were named co chairmen of the annual Girl Scout rummage sale. Date to be announced. Call Mrs. Arthur Lambert at EM 49 9711 for pickup of old clothes or rummage. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Comeau returned from a three week Canada vacation.
Concord fire department log lists dates from July 21 to July 24 detailing ambulance calls to Emerson Hospital and Metropolitan State Hospital, various still alarms, dump fires on Walden Street and Laws Brook Road, box and dwelling fires on Co Burn Hill Road, and a brush fire on Old Stow Road with multiple patient transports and standby actions.
Work is nearly finished on the bituminous resurfacing of Fitchburg turnpike and Sudbury road from Fitchburg turnpike to Bp Bridge, with Laws road to follow. Elm street Route 2A has also been resurfaced and now offers a smooth surface for motorists. Double feature billing: Wife Wanted and I Love Trouble.
Middlesex County commissioners confront the state natural resources department over Walden pond restoration plans. Walter Gropius joins the Save Walden Committee to advise on landscaping while Healey and Lambert push the state to supervise Walden as a public reservation.

Theodore M. Nelson reports 17 more positive Ditch Elm diseased trees found locally and plans are being made to cut them down. During the past three to four years Concord has lost several hundred trees due to this plague. Nelson asks landowners along newly planted areas to water them during the prolonged drought to save remaining saplings.
