The Southern Railway on November 15 opens three new offices in Birmingham Alabama Knoxville Tennessee and Chattanooga Tennessee to expand its Land and Industrial Department. Appointments include J W Paige to Chattanooga B G Hanson to Bristol H P L West to Knoxville J M Marsh to Birmingham and W Price to succeed R G Higgens Jr. The department will now have agents in Atlanta Macon Mobile Birmingham Chattanooga Bristow Columbia Ashe ville Brevard and Danville among others to advance agriculture manufacturing and local interests.

Southern loses heavily from wreck of Special
Kristol reports the Meroplie Special wreck five miles north of Hiristol caused one of the railroad’s costliest accidents in years. The Southern paid 7,000 to the widow of a mail clerk killed, 5,000 to the clerks’ father, with others receiving settlements. About thirty passengers were injured and property losses were heavy.

Romeo J Russell Dead in Jonesboro Tennessee
Romeo J Russell, well known in East Tennessee and railroad circles, died in Jonesboro of tuberculosis after a illness of over two years. Former chief clerk for the Southern Railroad at Knoxville, he resigned two years ago due to health. Interment was in the Soldiers Cemetery east of town after funeral services by the Masons. He was born January 1, and was nearly 40 years old. He was survived by his father J R Russell, proprietor of the Russell hotel. Large crowd attended the church service as a tribute to his character.
