Lawmaker Attacks Soldiers Home Management in House Debate

Washington May 1 One of the strongest arrangements ever examined in government service was by Representative Cox of Dayton Ohio in a speech on the National Soldiers Home. He charged waste and irregular expenditures and a policy of concealment in the board's dealings with Congress. The cost of maintaining homes had doubled since 1908 with only 7 percent more members, and Johnson City spent more on buildings than Dayton despite its youth. He compared ration costs, noting veterans received less bread and meat than soldiers, and highlighted lengthy use of mattresses and a coroner's verdict from Hampton Roads. Spokane May 1 After seven years a fugitive from justice Grat M Walk, a former Bristol Tenn police officer, was arrested in Coeur d Alene for the murder of Houston Childress. He admits guilt and will return to Tennessee.
