Wilder and rail plans loom over mineral wealth
From a private letter attributed to Gen Wilbur, the piece outlines Wilder as a key iron expert and practical maker connected to Hawsden. It discusses a proposed Cincinnati and Chicago line from Ashlin to Johnson City, its impact on Pocahontas and Cranberry ore regions, and lower costs for pig iron and steel with new coke ovens and rail links linking Virginia coal fields to broader markets.
