Historic rail line ends long quest from Dante to Elkhorn City
By W. S. Rose Clintwood Va Moon. The completion of a rail route from Dante Va to Elkhorn City Ky marks the end of an eighty year dream. Calhoun’s earlier vision, English capital in the 1880s, and later work by George I Carter culminate in 1914 with the Chesapeake and Ohio line reaching Elkhorn City and the Ohio River. The vast project traversed Blue Ridge, Clinch mountains, and Sandy Ridge tunnels, featuring 37 tunnels in 39 miles and heavy grading amid mica-rich stone. The line will serve coal traffic and, westward, passenger travel, linking Charleston to the Ohio river corridor.

Accuses Judge Williams of Working Convicts in Campaign
Nashville July 21. Democratic Party officials allege that convicts at the state penitentiary are being used to mail letters and sign papers supporting Judge Williams. J D Hill, chairman of the state executive committee, cites that thousands of letters on pen stationery bear Williams’ name and that even penitentiary workers and convicts are pressed to spread the effort. He claims signers cannot distinguish genuine court correspondence from convict mail.
