A long readable collage covers a Knights of Sevier Lodge notice in Johnson City Tennessee, a Georgia snake tale with electrical humor, and stockholder remarks from London about iron ore reserves and future steel growth in Johnson City, with related railway and ore commentary. The items reference Alfred Sully, Carnegie, and Proctor, plus Cleveland and Mackinac rail connections and Cincinnati routes.
The piece pivots on McDowell allegedly engineering a flash pan by proxy and promoting sub-treasury to aid third party “brethren.” It notes Tennessee coal mine conflict, convict lease law debate, and warns against outside labor intrusion while urging local unity. The Comet’s Exposition Edition plans in Raleigh are announced with a call for farm and textile samples and a sugar quota.
The city sits as a pivotal hub for trunk lines and terminal routes linking the mineral rich Alleghenies. It is portrayed as immensely rich in natural resources and a gateway to timber and mineral wealth.
In the Magnetic Ore District Johnson City sits 106 miles northeast of Knoxville at key railroad junctions. New lines are chartered or organized to Greensboro Wilkesboro and Cumberland Gap, linking the Richmond and Danville and other routes. The city boasts resources from timber to iron ores, limestone, fertile agriculture, and improving railroad access. Industrial ventures include tin and stove works, foundry, furniture, electric lighting, brick yards, tobacco and canning factories, bottling and milling firms, and rail projects. The population stands at 4 160 with rapid growth since 1880.
