Barrack Room Tales at Branca Reservation

A rambling camp bulletin notes Maj. Rosenbaum of the Inspector General’s office will visit next week. It catalogs arriving tourists, chaplains welcoming outside worshippers, modest wage hikes for hired hands, and efforts to replace shabby uniforms with olive wool. Personal vignettes include Dan Mitchell’s move to New Orleans, Corporal Lloyd’s Red Cross fundraising, and various soldiers’ idle, humorous exploits around camp life.

Government plan to insure all fighting soldiers and sailors

The government considers insuring every enlisted man against injury and death with a free life policy around four thousand dollars and allowances for disabling wounds. Backers cite faster aid to dependents and quicker benefits than pensions, while critics doubt long term viability and care needs. Gen Wood notes likely casualties of about sixty thousand per month during action, with many returning home for treatment and possible Soldier Homes care.

Two Pension Bills Touted By Kentucky Representative

Rep. John W. Longley of Kentucky introduces two pension bills. The first would raise Civil War veterans' rates, with $30 or $50 monthly tiers, starting after filing, aiding those in need with wages for assistance. The second bill seeks pensions for Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection survivors who are unable to perform manual labor, without proof of service origin, addressing testimony challenges and long efforts.
