Comet reports steep grade on 8. A. & C. RR excursion to Estillville
In the July 7 1887 issue The Comet notes excursion trains ran into Estillville on the 8. A. & C. RR but struggled at Walker's Mountain where two cars were max per run. Officials say grade is 190 feet per mile, yet four cars seem possible. Authors doubt freight viability against rivals and discuss consolidation talks with Magnetic Line.

April county court committees viewed ground Tuesday and chose a route avoiding the railroad. Use the old road four miles to Rader's Hill, bridge the railroad, ascend toward Johnson City, join the present road near Clark farm, then proceed to Johnson City. Route promises gentle grades and could shorten distance to about ten miles. Report due Monday for county court decision. Also obituaries and local notices follow, including Mrs A J Tilson of Asheville and Dr J Wy Pierce family notes. Backlen's Arnica Salve advertisement ends the item.
