Johnson City Becomes Steel Center Of The South
MUNSON CITY The Gateway to the Mineral and Timber Belt presents Johnson City 106 miles northeast of Knoxville at two trunk rail intersections. A Johnson City and Greensboro extension and an Cumberland Gap line are planned. The Southern and Western Air Line links Shelby to Cranberry to connect East Tennessee and Western North Carolina railroads. The city boasts vast timber, rich iron ore fields, limestone, developing rail facilities, a healthy climate, and a population of 4,160, with numerous industrial enterprises listed from tin and stove works to planning mills and canning factories. The Cranberry magnetic ore vein promises 20,000,000 tons of ore, with high ore quality and proximity to coke for steelmaking.
