Brave Young Doctor Hardy in Civil War Bridge Action
An onlooker recounts Dr. Hardy, a 19 year old Santa Barbara resident, as the bravest act seen in five years of Civil War service. On March 3, 1865 near Choraw, as Sherman moved through the Carolinas, Hardy skirmished at a Pedee River bridge, crawled under fire to a shor e edge position, fired on Confederate troops, and helped prevent the bridge from being burned, before fading into darkness after a late night exchange of shots.
