Pressure on tariff bill prompts publishers to act
Washington April 23 All members of the house received telegrams from publishers attending the Associated Press and Newspaper Publishers association meeting in New York urging action to remove the tariff from print paper and wood pulp. House leader Sharp Williams urged protest and motion to compel recognition. Representative Mann stated the subcommittee will begin an impartial inquiry into the paper question, timing undecided. Speaker Cannon said a special committee led by James R Manro of Illinois will investigate the alleged combination of print paper manufacturers and will compel testimony if publishers fail to come forward.

Carmack Criticizes Ripper Bill in Tennessee Charter Fight
A Memphis Commercial Appeal analysis rebuts Carmack's charges about the 1905 Memphis charter. It argues the plan did not authorize taxation beyond city limits and clarifies sections on extraterritorial health and sanitation powers, asserting Carmack misrepresented the charter and that Patterson did not author the bill.

Patterson Leads Carmack Battle in East Tennessee Gubernatorial Primary
East Tennessee voters show Patterson ahead of Carmack in Greensville and Limestone areas, with Patterson's supporters claiming superior organization. Democrats split while Republicans watch, fearing Carmack’s edge may not overcome Patterson’s momentum despite Carmack’s claimed regional advantage.
