Farm flock of 100 hens advised for Texas farms
Mrs. Greer Creager and several Texas farmers advocate a farm flock of about 100 hens as the optimal balance of labor and profitability. They hatch or buy 300 chicks, cull to 100 layers, and rely on scavenged feed and waste grain. The practice is praised as safer, less labor intensive, and more profitable than large poultry operations.
