Hutchins Sees Cotton Yield Gain From Vetch and Rye Cover
Grady Hutchins, a cooperator in the Upper Leon Soil Conservation District, estimates a bale per acre of cotton on his farm northwest of Sidney after two years of vetch and rye cover crops, with one third yield increase versus land without winter legumes. He notes cover crops protect soil, add organic matter, and supply nitrogen to boost next crops. Hutchins plans fall planting of cover crops along with contour cultivation, strip cropping, terracing, stubble mulch tillage, and deep-rooted legumes like Hubam and Madrid clover next year. He urges neighbors to plant winter legumes, believing moisture and proper inoculation and fertilization improve success. New county ag agent Cyn thia Lee McKethan began Sept 1 as Comanche County’s Home Demonstration Agent. she is a McGregor native and a 1952 graduate of Midway School with a degree from North Texas State College.
