Clayton W Carnes Dies At Ninety Two In Comanche County
Clayton W Carnes a longtime Comanche County resident died Wednesday night at age ninety two Born January 6 1842 in Carroll County Georgia he arrived in the county in 1857 and served as Chief Justice before the Civil War Later enlisted as first lieutenant in Company L 21st Texas Cavalry He was noted for strict integrity and was interred in Goalewood Cemetery Funeral services were conducted at the family residence with Rev J R Morris and Rev J E Milton presiding Pallbearers included T R Slimsey George Montgomery and others He was survived by Eleanor Taylor Carnes his wife of 39 years and a large family lineage.

Cotton receipts in Comanche reach 2 277 bales for the season as residents mourn Thomas Langston Hutchison born in 1845. Toll of fire at Proctor leaves town with heavy losses
Fire in Proctor on Thursday night September 18 destroyed portions of the business district. Losses total about 20000 with only 6500 in insurance. BE M Stone suffered about 14000 in losses, insured for 5500. Fire began in Stone’s telephone office over his store, caused by a lamp explosion. Telegraph and post office buildings, Sims grocery, Masonic hall, barber shop, and other structures also burned, with varying insured amounts and no insurance on the Sims building.

Schools Seek State Aid in Corhanche County
Thirty seven schools in Corhanche county seek state aid this year, a drop from last year due to a 75 cent local school tax. County Superintendent Gantz notes applications must reach his office by October 5 to be filed properly and sent to Austin on time. Custer adds a room and transportation for students. Hasse adds vocational equipment. Gustine had similar equipment last year. Newburg plans an assembly hall. One hundred forty one teachers belong to the State Teachers' Association, about 70 percent of county teachers. Dr J J Pitts of Brownwood will stay in Comanche two weeks for chronic trouble work, at his daughter Mrs Winlcott's residence.
