Missionary Family Leaves Comanche for Samoa Four-Year Term

Reverend and Mrs Don Dobyns and family depart Comanche on a four year mission to the Samoan Islands with the United Pentecostal Church International. Dobyns, son of Mrs D F Dobyns and the late D F Dobyns of Comanche, began life in Comanche County. Mrs Dobyns, daughter of J W Hurt, grew up in Gustine. The family has pastored in Albany Carlsbad Aztec New Mexico Phoenix and Comanche and now joins the Comanche church in supporting the mission through prayers and financial aid. Comanche friends await their return.

A nationwide survey shows Comanche County posted higher retail activity than many areas in 1970. The report, by Sales Management, records sales of over 25.4 million dollars and net income around 25.98 million, yielding a per household income of 5 772 dollars and an index of sales activity at 120, above the national average.

Reese Elected To Head Texas City Officials

Odessa Mayor Jim Reese is elected president of the Texas Association of Mayors, Councilmen and Commissioners for a one year term at the Texas Municipal League conference in Houston. He will lead AMCC and AMCON efforts, work with state committees, and set up training programs for new city officials. Reese plans to reseek Odessa mayoral office in 1972 and will participate in evaluating bills affecting municipalities.

Government taxes squeeze Comanche County workers

A Tex Foundation study estimates 10 year local earnings averaged 67 900 per family with 8 800 paid in Federal income and Social Security taxes. Hidden taxes of 74 per 100 paid in those taxes raise the burden, totaling about 6 510 per family over the decade.

Grant Made For Area Crime Control Project

Gov. Preston Smith approved two criminal justice action grants totaling 31781 for local government units in the West Central Texas Council of Governments area. Coleman County gains 19781 to hire two assistant probation officers across four counties. Abilene gets 12000 to plan a regional criminal justice information system.

Local PPKers Compete in San Angelo Zone Meet

First place winners from the Pass Punt and Kick contest traveled to San Angelo for zone competition. Participants included Steve Hazelrigg Bart McDougal David Davis Larry Amos Mike Puckett Jerry Walker and David Robinson PP&E coordinator. Mike Puckett placed third in 10 year olds Amos third in 11 year olds. Clemons Motor Company sponsored the local event now in its eleventh year. Robinson thanks participants and bids good luck next year. Central Texas awards 28 requests totaling 1 308 544 in CJC funding.

Meeting on Trailer Requirements Set by Farm Groups

The Comanche County Young Farmers and the Farm Bureau sponsor a program on new trailer laws effective January 1. Joe Smetana of the Texas Farm Bureau will present at the Comanche County Courthouse on October 19 at 7 30 p.m. Attendance is open to all interested individuals regardless of membership.

Wilkerson Elected Director of Zone 3 District

J. T. Wilkerson was elected director of Zone 3 of the Upper Leon Soil and Water Conservation District. The vote occurred last week in the district building at De Leon where Wilkerson also serves as secretary. He operates a 227 acre peanut and beef cattle farm two miles south of De Leon alongside four other board members Gene Gilbreath Norman Moore EB F Harrison and Joe Criswell from Zones 1 2 5 and 4 respectively.

Comanche School Board Sets Budget Hearing and Contracts

The Comanche School Board approved September minutes and bills. A report on the Air-Conditioner Study was heard and local dealers were to be contacted for details. Tax assessor James Bachus reported on tax roll progress and his contract was extended to January 11, 1973. The annual budget hearing was scheduled for October 26 at 7 pm in the Elementary School Auditorium.

Kristy Hicks Tops Comanche Chief's Football Contest

Kristy Hicks daughter of Mr and Mrs Billy Hicks won the Comanche Chief's football contest with only two misses. Don Kirkland of Brownwood finished second and Mrs George Walker of Comanche third, each with three misses.
