The May 11 1914 regular session of the Commissioners Court presided by Judge J H McMillan records insurance on County Farm buildings discontinued road changes accepted tax election in School District No 12, 25 yes 12 no, Sidney Independent School District report approved and petitions by E B Dewey for altering Jacksonville Shrum and Brooks districts approved noting territory shifts exceeding 9 square miles and detailing boundary changes along Lampasas line and Sipe Springs Amity road to reconfigure districts.
The Executive Committee of the Comanche County Good Roads Association presented petitions to the Commissioners Court urging a permanent road crew. About forty business and farming leaders joined, with hundreds signing, and a called session on the 18th is expected to grant the request.
The west corner of the Jacksonville district adds 160 acres from Shrum and 25 acres from Brooks to the Jacksonville School District. This land acquisition enlarges the district boundaries and affects local school zoning and funding.

Citizens are urged to patronize local stores to keep money in the community and boost growth. If merchants cannot offer comparable goods and prices, residents should still favor local shops to fund streets, schools, churches, and other community needs.
The De Leon Good Roads Committee met in regular session with a small invited crowd as most citizens attended court in Comanche. Members present were W. C. Sanford E. B. Dewey Hilton Burks Tom Bell J L Cox and Jnc P Hoff. Burks read letters from Hamilton County officials and the McKinley Corrigan Co. about road crews and road law amendments. The secretary reported about 2000 signatures on petitions. the group expressed support for the association and its aims.
An effort to provide free mail delivery for Comanche hinges on sidewalk and crossing upgrades plus street lighting. A Chamber of Commerce committee led by Hilton Burks and Prof R F Holloway seeks an agreement with the City Council to install forty lights paid partly by the chamber and partially by the city at $75 monthly. May or Cunningham and Alder Skinner will discuss terms and draw a contract acceptable to all parties.
The City Council met in regular session and elected W. L. Reeves as Water Superintendent succeeding Green West who resigned. Reeves will take charge after qualifying and bond, bond set at 1000. Mayor and City Secretary authorized to secure a loan to cover accounts. A special session was set for Wednesday night May 13 to consider final passage of the sanitary ordinance. Salaries and bills were approved and warrants issued.
Hon James E K Ferguson gubernatorial candidate will address a Brownwood audience Saturday afternoon at the New Theatre.
A G Lane born Jasper County Georgia March 8 1884 died May 8 1914 in Texas after years of poor health since the Civil War he married Melissa Shipp who died in 1912. He died at his brother E D Lane s home with two daughters Dawsie and Grady and four sons Joe Walter Preston and Tom all in Georgia surviving siblings and a sister Mrs W F Batton of this city.
G H Hodge an oil and gas expert from Waco visits Gustine territory and says prospects show oil potential at various depths. He notes active development could begin in the near future as exploration continues in the Gustine area.
Hon James E Ferguson of Temple will speak in Comanche on Wednesday May 27 and in Dublin and Hamilton on May 28 as part of his Texas governor campaign. He then proceeds by auto to De Leon for a night address, described as a forceful and interesting speaker guest of the city. The notice urges courteous hearing and notes Ferguson’s active statewide campaign.
Miss Eugenia Gray hosts a Kensington Club gathering at the Gray home. Mr. and Mrs. Gray assist with hospitality as Mrs. Warner presents a paper on Women's Duty to Woman. Guests enjoy strawberry cream and wafers. Attendees include Clemons Gray Hill Houghton Harris Bennett Witt Gille Pollan Ory Dunlap Pierce Donaho Durham Simmons.
The Senior Class presents a four act comedy The Touch Down in the High School Auditorium Tuesday night May 19 admission charged cast includes Grant Hayden Herman Rieger Robt Hayden Bill Bolding Alfred Wolf Tobe Howze Gene Clark Earl Ellis James Brooks Oliver Hudson Curtis Stevens Frank Mitchell Tom Herring Guthrie Layne Watassa Faulkner Lucile Hall Rena Maynard Vera Waldrop Margery Carson Zena West Collie Sylvester Glyneth Kearby Evelyn Sylvester Mary Grainger Priscilla Parmelle Lucile Hogan.
The Study Club held a regular session with president Mrs. William Reese presiding. Reese was elected delegate to the State Federation meeting in Galveston in November, with Holloway as alternate. Holloway also named delegate to the District Federation, Cunningham as alternate. The group adjourned to meet May 14 at Mrs. Larry Kittle.
In Plainview and Houston reports Senator Joseph Weldon Bailey expressed pleasure at the nomination of Tom Ball for governor. Bailey said he will work actively to advance Ball and signals his first clear stance in the Texas governor race.
Support letters and telegrams reportedly from former Senator J W Bailey favoring Hon Thomas H Ball have circulated privately in Texas. Bailey’s public declaration was postponed to build a coordinated showing of backing before any official word.
Mrs J K E White passed away after two weeks of tuberculous illness. She leaves a husband a sister Miss Hattie Gray of Oklahoma and one brother W A Gray of Phoenix Arizona. Funeral held at Cox cemetery at 11 o'clock Sunday morning with Rev Vinson officiating. The community extends sympathy to the family.
J. E. Smith of Gustine route 2, a 74 year old subscriber for forty years, recalls how the great religious weekly drew him to the county and has kept him loyal as a frequent reader who misses the paper when it does not arrive on time.
The State Board of Education has contracted to purchase the Vandyke school bond issue of 1600 dollars and bonds from Comanche Common School District No. 26 for 2500 dollars and Common School District No. 45 for 1500 dollars.
