Castormeal Feed Trial Studied For Cattle In Texas
County agent Floyd M. Key reports Texas A M University researchers feeding castormeal to heifers at the Rolling Plains Livestock Research Station to test safety and gains. Paul Marion notes slow start, daily gains around 2.1 pounds, protein near 32 percent, oil-mill improvements could raise crude protein to about 40 percent. Castormeal costs about 55 dollars a ton versus 88 dollars for cottonseed meal, with potential as a cheaper protein source if milling advances lift protein and reduce fiber.
