De Leon Comyn Take Honors In Close Interscholastic Meet

County students paraded in Comanche for the Interscholastic League Meet over two days with De Leon claiming Class A athletic and all round titles. Comyn Grammar topped Class B, while Gustine dominated debates and tennis events. Comanche and De Leon split declamations with debates ending in Comanche wins.

District Court Opens in Comanche for New Terms

The spring term of District Court convenes April 22 in Comanche as the fourth Monday instead of the usual third. Tom F. Reese becomes District Attorney, with Sheriff John Reese. both assume duties January 1. Reese previously secured murder convictions at Gatesville and is now in Hamilton. trials in Comanche are expected to include car theft and liquor law cases before Judge Cross. The Grand and Petit juries are listed as Morgan and Energy.

County's Oldest Citizen Visits Chief Office

E. D. Lane, 97, regarded as Comanche County's oldest citizen, visited The Chief Office on Thursday. He recently returned from an auto trip to Bosque County and plans a trip next week to Coleman.

Comanche Hosts Major Track Meet With Scouts Support

The biggest track and field meet in a decade is set at the Comanche ballpark today at 2:00 p m. Champions from Comanche Dublin May and Hamilton will take part with Class B County runners in special events. A small admission pays for Scout travel to the National Scout Jamboree in Washington D C. School and Scout officials urge full attendance.

Highway 81 Completion Celebrated in Central Texas

More than 1,596 people gathered Tuesday afternoon to celebrate Highway 81 between Comanche and De Leon. The event featured a 16 mile motorcade, bands, and a program led by E H Boulter with remarks by De Leon Mayor Frank Daniels and Comanche Chamber officials. Speakers predicted future four and five lane roads and urged wider right of way as the celebration noted roads from De Leon to Fredericksburg. Cities represented included Comanche De Leon Waco Dublin Gustine Sipe Springs and Brownwood.

Final Cotton Sign-Up Date Announced for 1985

Farmers must see their local committeemen on March 3 or March 7 to complete the 1955 cotton sign-up. Wortham says all 1934 contract signers must re-sign in 1985 and new signers may also join. Committeemen will be at designated locations.

Texan Senate Committee Proposes Attorney General Salary Rise

A communication from Lieutenant Governor Walter F. Woodul notes Senate Joint Resolution No. 12 would raise the Attorney General’s salary from 4000 to 10000 dollars a year. The 1986 General Election will consider the amendments.

Work Begun On Highway 1 Through Comanche

Preliminary work on completing Highway No 1 through the City of Comanche and east to the Isham farm began Thursday. L. K E Whitham Construction Co of Wichita Falls leads the project, grading drainage structures caliche base and triple asphalt surface over 7.7 miles from Indian Creek Bridge to Isham farm. Completion will give Comanche its second hard surfaced road since 1935. No 81 surfacing from De Leon to Comanche has just been completed.

Local breeder buys stallion for Comanche showing

T QO Lane, a Dallas area breeder, bought a one year old Percheron stallion from John W Carpenter Breeding Farm near Dallas this week. Lane plans to exhibit the horse in Comanche on Monday and has years of experience standing stallions and jacks at his farm.

Confederate Vet Continues Subscription To The Chief

Co R Carruth, Confederate veteran and pioneer settler of Comanche, renewed his subscription to The Chief this week. Last year he was among the two Confederate Veterans at the Comanche County Old Settlers Reunion. He says he has read The Chief since memory recalls.

Senate 13 Yields Action On Rural School Aid Bill

Texas House approved a bill to appropriate 10 million dollars over the next biennium for rural school aid and equalization, up from 6 million. Senate action awaited. The plan funds rural aid 4 million yearly plus 750 thousand for vocational education and 150 thousand for crippled children education including about 51 thousand to Galveston hospital. An Alfred Petsch amendment to restrict rural aid use passed after a heated fight.

Holmes Files City Tax Suits

City attorney Y. W. Holmes filed twelve delinquent tax suits in District Court on Thursday and said suits would be filed daily through April 10. A partial tax payment would halt the actions.
