1981 saw perhaps the largest fruit tree planting in the county's history with estimates up to 100000 trees this spring. Most were peaches though plums rising. many farmers expanded home orchards and nurseries report more commercial plantings than any year. T J Williams' orchard tops seven hundred to one thousand trees. several five to ten acre orchards noted. Pecan trees also expanding on bottom farms as dealers report. Chamber of Commerce market growth cited as key factor.

R. RB, Waldrop and Fane Waldrop announced they have assumed management of the TTPL Service Station at the southeast corner of the square. They took charge Wednesday, succeeding Lionel Slider.
The Agyviculture class of the Pettit School plans to attend the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show Saturday. Teacher H. H. Lockeridge says the trip is part of the year’s class laboratory work.
Senator Walter C. Woodward issues a statement to constituents City Austin February 25 1951 addressing the proposed constitutional amendment financing state highways He objects to bonding the state for hundreds of millions without safeguards and notes support for letting the people decide while warning of radical changes and plans to issue 20 million in bonds to build highways and refund counties and road districts.
Dublin cotton buyer J. R. Brame notes last year’s Comanche County cotton improved markedly with ninety percent of bales classed as stable versus about sixty percent previously. He observes more territory cotton meeting stable standards and reports growers earned extra per bale. Brame represents the Certified Seed Breeders Association in Comanche, Erath and Eastland counties.
The Interscholastic League opens Friday March 13 with debates at DeLeon High School at nine oclock. Winners advance to Comanche March 20 and finals March 21 at the county meet. Debate teams include Marian Lucille Donaho Jo Gray J Frank Redwine Jr Monselle OBrien. Play Ground Ball rounds March 18 with south counties at Comanche and north at DeLeon.
Two hundred fifty thousand dollars is estimated to be available to Comanche County war veterans under the bonus bill passed over the President's veto. About five hundred ex-soldiers in the county may each receive around five hundred dollars, with some having not yet applied for their bonus. Local Lemon circles urge these veterans to file applications promptly.
R. H. (Bob) Isham and W. F. (Ted) Bear assume management of the Star Service Station on the Brownwood Highway. The two men, well known in the area, took charge of the business on March 4.
Radio listeners may hear two Comanche girls each morning at 9 00 over the Brownwood station. Miss Olene Mc Kensie sings and Misa Wilhun Woalline plays piano. They are employed by the Dean Water Refining Company of Houston and broadcast as part of their daily work in Brownwood.
A northeast Comanche house owned by the Toda estate and occupied by Robert F. Barry burned around 2 90 a.m. Thursday. The structure and contents were total losses, with partial insurance on the home and contents. Firefighters confined the fire to the single building after discovery by Ed Burt, though several nearby houses were threatened.
Miss Glady de Silva Bates director of the Little Theatre in San Angelo will give a three act comedy reading at Comanche High School on Friday evening March 18. Bates, a Currie School Boston graduate, has taught dramatic art at San Angelo High School since 1921 and led the San Angelo One Act Play to a state championship.
Farmers flock back to Comanche County seeking land to farm. The area sees renewed activity as several hundred growers, including former residents, return to plant crops this year. Local sources say county farmers are in better shape due to diversified crops, with cotton hit hardest by past disasters.
The Texas Highway Commission let three road contracts Friday and Saturday involving Comanche County. J Floyd Malcolm of Abilene won the Leon River bridge job on Highway 10 for 75421, using local labor where possible. Lacy and Company Dallas secured the Brazos River bridge at Granbury for 115292, and General Construction Company Fort Worth won 271859 for fourteen miles of concrete surface from Brownwood to the county line.
Sidney route details note a safe lunch promotion. A. C. Jones Lucille Jones and K. D. Jones receive a family pass to the Majestic theater on Thursday March 12.
