Ben Cleveland local Perry Bros. manager was installed as president of the Comanche Lions Club on Tuesday night June 23. The Installation Committee led by Lion Virgil Norris installed officers including D F Caraway 1st vice president Piez Todd 2nd vice president Jack Moore 3rd vice president John Beaty secretary E H Denny Lion tamer George Willis tail twister. Board of directors includes Albert Brannan Porter Franks Louis Harelik Chester McKinzie and retiring president Bill Dudney.
The Comanche Public Library held its fifth annual meeting on June 23 with Mrs Bill Wilkerson as president and Joe Waring, vice president. New board members include Joe Waring and Mrs G P Tate, while Rena Owen is treasurer and Ben Sudderth serves as legal advisor. The library houses over 5400 volumes and recorded 11230 circulations in 1963, operated by volunteers with 1123 hours contributed by five students and eight adults. It operates on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
The Chief will mail on Wednesday July 1 instead of Thursday July 2. Comanche firms close Saturday July 4 for the holiday, but shoppers still see week end ads. Request for timely copy and ads, thanks for cooperation.
Fifty-eight Comanche Lions were honored Tuesday night June 23 with membership awards and certificates. Retiring President Lion Bill Dudney presented Chevron and Monarch Chevrons to 25 Year 20 Year 15 Year and 10 Year recipients including How ell Cobb Pat Cagle Castle Ellis John Pogue Co M Albin Euell Arthur C A Bain and many others across multiple service years.
Clyde House, longtime member of the local Lions Club since January 1938, was honored with the Lions International Club Builder Award at the Tuesday night meeting. The presentation was made by retiring president Lion Bill Dudney.
Ernest Arias, visiting county agent from Costa Rica, is in Fort Collins for a three week graduate study program at Colorado State University. He travels with his wife Lydia and children Luis Diego, Fernando, Ernesto, Myriam, and Cecilia. He reports a 1000 mile trip from Comanche to Fort Collins, mentioning a thunderstorm in Amarillo, hot weather, a little rain in Colorado, a tire blowout, and an empty spare.
Roadef a Houston businessman is in Herman Hospital following a minor surgery performed Thursday. He is reported in satisfactory condition and expected to make a swift recovery.
The First Baptist Church of Comanche has named Dr. Ellis L. Carnett as interim pastor. He will serve until a permanent pastor is chosen. Carnett resides in Brownwood and previously led Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth. He has taught at three Southern Baptist seminaries and served as Buckner Benevolences president for Texas.
Lane and Boyd join Texas Young Farmers planning team traveling to Dallas June 29 to finalize plans for the January 1965 State meeting. They will help set speakers, entertainers, press dinner, the Elec Cooperatives luncheon, and exhibit booths with Comanche booths by Central Texas Fertilizer Co. and Moorman Manufacturing.
Johnston's 66 Station at 1101 E Central will host a grand opening on Saturday June 27. Owned by T A Johnston the Phillips 66 site has been under his management for about a month after moving from Mesa Arizona. A free six pack of Pepsi Cola with each fill up and a free tree seed job upon bottle return are offered.
A large crowd attended Sunday at Burks Museum to watch "Big Bertha" the 1914 steam engine in action. A. P. Burks wore striped overalls and an engineer's cap as he loaded wood and water and took the engine for a spin. Visitors from New York to California signed the guest roster, including groups from Haus Lubbock Ballinger Brownwood Fort Worth Big Spring De Leon Fort Hood Hamilton Gustine and Comanche.
Glen Ellis, a University of Texas graduate physicist in DRL's acoustics division, will lead a $25,000 effort for the U S Oceanographic Office to study water pressure at the ocean bottom. The project, based at Burzards Bay off Cape Cod, measures waves and the glow-frequency oscillation of bay waters.
State Attorney General Waggoner Carr designated four Comanche High School students as delegates to the Second Annual Attorney General's Youth Conference at the Texas State Capitol July 10 11 and 12. Delegates Jane Ellen Caraway Malcolm Lee Cleveland Jowen Quinn Mason and John Anthony Norris will join 1600 delegates from 254 counties for seminars on juvenile crime solutions.

Beattie Community invites former teachers students and residents to a reunion on Sunday June 28. Attendees bring a basket lunch and meet in Beattie to renew old schoolmates and friendships. B Ray McCorkle serves as president with Mrs Curtis Thornton treasurer and Dave Ravenshine master of ceremonies.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Gamblin of Lubbock announce the birth of a son Paul Dean on June 20 at West Texas Hospital in Lubbock. He weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and measured 2014 inches long. Grandmothers Mrs J C Lester of Comanche and Mrs H C Gamblin of Comanche are noted.
Mr and Mrs Carl D Halls Rt 3 Comanche announce the birth of a daughter Carla Jean on Monday June 15 in a German hospital. She weighed nine pounds six ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Thomas Parkman and Mr and Mrs Carl Hall of Rt 3 Comanche.
The Harelik Raiders lead the standings after six straight wins and only need a win over Gustine Saturday to secure the regular season title in the Little League. The Pee Wee Saints top the First Methodist Church with five wins and no losses, meeting Gustine Friday in a pivotal showdown.
The Comanche Public Library invites the public to an open house and memorial books showing on Thursday July 2 from 9 to 12 and 1 to 5 o clock. The library board aims to display books donated in memory to honoring donors and families. Visitors are urged to attend and support the library, even during a coffee break.
The 4-H Gold Star Tour runs over two days with judging for girls on June 29 and boys on June 30. Participants include Jane Ann Robertson Lola Wayne Pair Peggy Evans Dorothy Byrd Bobby Lane and Walter McCullough. tours leave the courthouse at 8 am for girls and 1 15 pm for boys with return times around 4 pm.
Mrs Alma Wiley Brightman born June 23 1867 in Oxford Mississippi observed her 97th birthday with a June 23 party hosted by Mr and Mrs J C Wilkerson for her mother. Attendees included six children and several grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
The City of Comanche starts a Learn To Swim program supervised by CHS Band Director Jack L. King. Nine days of three one hour classes daily at 9 10 and 11 at the Municipal Pool Lake Eanes Park with beginners intermediates and advanced life saving courses and diving possible. Contact Mrs Roy Nelson at the pool concession to join. A short instructional period will precede the classes.
