County Young Farmers Promote Conservation Efforts

Archie E. Boyd Jr. reports Comanche County Young Farmers, newly formed, promoted conservation by sponsoring a Grass Identification contest for the Future Farmers of America. They served as section leaders and graded papers while Upper Leon Soil Conservation District arranged the plant identifications. The group, active since last September, also studied soil testing fertilization and farm income tax considerations for soil and water conservation, noting deductions under IRC Section 175 for eligible current expenses.

Ranchers Prove Proper Range Use Boosts Profits in Texas

Pat Trew of the Soil Conservation Service reports fourteen rancher groups in Central Texas found proper range use yields higher profits per acre and per cow equivalent than overuse. Benefits include soil and water conservation, cooler soils, healthier plants, more forage, and seed production. Proper use means leaving half the annual growth, about 2000 pounds per acre, to prevent erosion and maintain moisture. Studies show three to five times more grass produced under proper use, with key principles on grazing impact, regrowth, and soil moisture.
