Populist Rise in Comanche County Texas History
The Comanche Pioneer Exponent recounts the Populist party in Comanche County from its 1880s emergence through its peak in 1898, led by Tom Gaines and local figures. It notes key platforms on railroad rates, currency, and government ownership, and lists 1898 elected county officers all from the Populist party. It describes meeting places, including a grove nicknamed for ghost dances under kerosene-lit trees.
