Comanche County Tax Assessor Lightfoot urges residents subject to poll tax to pay by February 1 to qualify as 1948 voters. Only eight days remain before the deadline as a statewide drive seeks heavy payments to prevent disqualification from upcoming elections shaping government affairs.
The Comanche County Tax Assessor-Collector reports new 1948 automobile license tags. Tags go on sale February 1 and are black with yellow figures. Plate range starts BR6000. Owners may tag after February 1 with 1947 Texas registration receipt. Total county fees exceed $50,000 with the first $50,000 staying in county.
Ross Gore 69 of Comanche County died at his West Grand Avenue home Tuesday night after a three month illness. Funeral services were held at Comanche Funeral Home with Elder Len Dalton and Rev. Urban Schulze officiating. Burial at Mercer Gap Cemetery. Gore, born December 25, 1878 in Henderson County Texas, lived in Mercer Gap and Comanche, working as a carpenter. Survived by his children Mrs. Reynolds, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Stark, Ulric Gore, Bertha Gore, Gertrude Mallard, Eddie Gore, 15 grandchildren, brother J. W. Gore. wife Nora Ellen Carver died in 1943. His son William Lois Gore was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944.
The Comanche County Junior Livestock Show conducted Tuesday drew record entries with prizes exceeding 500 dollars. Champions include Brunelle Spencer in steers and hogs champion Rodney Irby, with top finishers across senior and junior divisions in steers hogs lambs and capons judged by John Tarleton College officials.
About seventy five business leaders attended the Comanche Chamber of Commerce annual banquet. John Tarleton College Ensemble performed twelve songs under Robert Hutchinson. President Thomas Taylor of Howard Payne College delivered the main address. The 1947 accomplishments include funding school salaries, supporting band and 4 H activities, peanut packaging, a soil conservation election, a pecan field day, rodeo sponsorship, REA building site, and Santa Day with a thousand gifts. Holidays for 1984 were proposed and rejected.
The 1947 Comanche High School football season generated gate receipts of 5753.73, likely an all time high. The Indians finished second in District 10-A behind the Eastland Mavericks, with six home games and four away.
Interest grows for the not-Thru-Teen-Age style show to be presented at the Comanche High School Auditorium March 5 at 7 30 p.m. under the auspices of the Presbyterian ladies. Mrs W H Slider says a list of sponsoring business firms will be announced next week and invites calls to 163 for more information.
John Nicholson announces for County Attorney, Ben Wilhelm seeks District Clerk, and D E Nabers runs for Justice of Peace Precinct No. Mr Nicholson, a World War I veteran, previously served as county attorney after Bob Long’s resignation and has legal practice in San Antonio and Houston. Wilhelm, a former District Clerk, was appointed in 1947 to finish Otis Coker’s term and is known to county voters. Nabers, a Van Dyke farmer, is active in the Baptist Association and Old Settlers Reunion with REA ties.
Comanche farmer Elmo Montgomery, 56, died at a Brownwood hospital Monday morning after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at the Montgomery Ranch home with Dr. C. C. Klingman officiating. interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Stella Hicks Montgomery, his mother, a sister, and two brothers.
The Central Texas Fertilizer Company opens in Comanche with a 100000 dollar facility, 315 by 40 feet building, four stories max, producing 30 tons per hour and backed by W M Durham Jr Floyd W Prather and Pat Cagle. The plant offers Topper Brand fertilizer with an iron clad guarantee and plans a March or April formal opening.
The county is allotted 69,400 to aid farmers with approved conservation practices for the 1948 program year. Written county committee approval is required before starting any practice to ensure funds are not overspent. Approved practices include terracing, diversion terracing, tanks or dams, mesquite control, pasture grasses or legumes, phosphate, winter legumes, and brush renovation.
