Spannell Acquitted By Jury In Alpine Texas Case
In Brownwood Texas on January 17 1917 Harry J Spannell a former Texas music teacher was acquitted by a district court jury after a third trial over the 1916 shooting deaths of his wife Mrs Crystal Spannell and Colonel M Butler near Alpine. The verdict followed two hours of deliberation with Spannell absent from the courtroom when announced. The defense argued a former jeopardy plea and the appeals court had ordered a new trial previously for that issue.
