State Old Age Assistance figures show high caseloads and costs
In fiscal 1957 the Public Welfare Office logged 5 830 petitions for Old Age Assistance covering 6 780 children. About 30 percent of petitions came from step parents and relatives seeking adoptions. The caseload averaged 390 cases per worker, the heaviest in the nation. Admin costs per case averaged $1.46 monthly, well below the national $3.51. Texas had the lowest cost except for West Virginia and Arkansas. Also noted is a coaching change as La nkford moves from De Leon to Gatesville High School for next year.
