Barnes elected Texas House Speaker amid rules fight
The Texas House chose Ben Barnes of De Leon as speaker by acclamation after a tense run for the post. A liberal bloc demanded limits on the speaker’s power to hire and fire staff, but the resolution passed 137 to 5, with Barnes outlining goals for a productive 140 day session. Barnes announced interviews for committee assignments and plan to publish standing committees by January 28, with bill introductions to begin January 29.
