Poultry Mash Trials at Beltsville Farm Yield Insights
The United States Department of Agriculture reports eight years of feeding trials at Beltsville Maryland with over 1,000 hens. A mash of 4 percent bran 4 percent middlings 26 percent meat scrap and 66 percent corn meal produced strong laying results in Leghorns and Reds while Wyandottes and Plymouth Rocks tended to fatten unless meat scrap is reduced. Ground oats additions showed no benefit and varying grain proportions affects economics. fish scrap emerged as a cheaper protein source with good results especially when meat scrap is reduced.
