Sherman druggist Maurice Brightman dies after short illness

L. M. Brightman 45 of Sherman Texas died at a local hospital after a 24 hour illness from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was the owner of Wallace Pharmacy and widely known for charity and Christmas gifts to area children. Surviving are his wife Mary Loomis son James Morris daughter Eleanor Lane two sisters one brother and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Waldo Funeral Chapel with Masonic rites at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Thirteenth Annual Junior Livestock Show Planned Here

Plans nearing completion for the Thirteenth Annual Junior Livestock Show to be held Tuesday January 20 at the Livestock Building. Comanche Livestock Association sponsors with Gail Dudley as president and Edwin Pierson as general superintendent overseeing division heads and judges from Comanche County Vocational School and John Tarleton College. The association reports strong entries and about $600 in prize money for 4 H and FFA entrants.

Proctor Teams Sweep Top Honors In Local Tournament

Crowds packed the Comanche High School gym as Proctor boys and girls captured championship titles in the Big Chief Basketball Tourney. Proctor boys beat Blanket 35-22 while Proctor girls defeated Comanche 34-15 to seal their divisions. All tournament squads included players from Proctor, Blanket, De Leon, Beattie, Gustine, Sidney, and Comanche with Dewitt of Proctor earning Best All Around Sport honors.

Claude R. Wickard announced the resignation of Carl Hamilton as Assistant Administrator of the REA and appointed George W. Haggard of Gustine, long time general manager of the Texas Power Reserve Electric Cooperative, to replace him. Haggard, a Texas native, has led the Texas Power Reserve and contributed to national cooperative efforts for 30 years. Prior roles include executive secretary to the Texas Farm Bureau Federation. He is a Hardin-Simmons University graduate.

Mrs. Hart Dies in Van at 67. Rites Held in Comanche

Mrs. John Hart, 67, died at her daughter’s home in Van after a heart ailment. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Comanche with Eastern Star observances and burial at Oakwood Cemetery. She had long lived in Comanche and was active in church work and the W M A. Survivors include a daughter Mrs D W Wheeler and several siblings.

Funeral Rites Here For Mrs. A. D. Reese

Mrs. A. D. Lara Reese died at her sister’s home in Comanche after a six week illness. Funeral services were held at the Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. J. A. Brooks presiding. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. She was 49, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wilson, and survived by three sons Odell Lee and A. V. Reese and by her parents. Her husband had died three years ago.
