Sheriff Brightman Named Special Investigator in Justice Department

Brightman, longtime sheriff of Anhe County, has been appointed special investigator for the U S Department of Justice in Washington. He leaves Friday for a three month training course before field work. The Commissioners Court will name a successor to fill his unexpired term as applicants are sought. The Justice Department, newly expanded under President Roosevelt, enforces federal criminal laws and has pursued notorious crime figures while targeting kidnappers highwaymen and bootleggers.

Government expands cattle buying in Comanche County

The Government allows Comanche County to buy 1500 more head of cattle from farmers and stockmen due to ongoing dry weather. Beattie Schools Name New Superintendent

Prof Vandegriff of Stephenville elected Beattie Schools superintendent to replace Eldon Feril who resigned due to ill health after a nervous breakdown. Feril was hospitalized in Dallas for treatment. Dingwall longtime Comanche resident dies at 90

D Dingwall, one of Comanche’s oldest residents, died at his home Friday after a long illness at age 90. He came to Comanche in 1880, lived there 54 years, and ran a shoe repair shop. Funeral service Sunday at the Presbyterian Church with Dr. R Guy Davis and Rev. Gordon Barrett officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery under Masonic Lodge direction. Cravens To Drill For Oil On His McCulloch Ranch

H. L. Cravens of Brownwood has contracted for a oil well on his McCulloch County ranch. The Cravens site adjoins the White ranch where a water well recently struck oil at 690 feet, producing an estimated 80 to 50 barrels daily by heads. Work should begin within 15 days and cementing and rod installation done prior to an accurate gauge of production.

Five Bale Cotton Law Exemption Creed Proposed

Representative Miller Democrat Arkansas says he drafted an amendment to the Bankhead Act to grant a minimum allotment of five bales of cotton to each head of a family. The measure would exempt this amount from taxation and aims to address inequities harming tenants and sharecroppers in cotton farming.

Skeleton found near Rising Star linked to McBee murder

Raymond Henry and his wife were arrested for the murder of H L McBee after a skeleton identified as McBee was found hanging from a tree near Rising Star cemetery. The couple, held by Eastland and Rising Star officials, face charges filed by Justice Will Morrison.

Three Die In Sunday Crash On Highway 10 East Of Stephenville

A man and two women were killed when their car collided with a produce truck on Highway 10, five miles east of Stephenville. Victims were Chester Ratliff 29 and his wife Alice 28 of Darwin Oklahoma and Ira Ratliff 84 of Stephenville. Ira’s sister in law Mrs Ira Ratliff 20 and Ira’s brother Everett Ratliff 19 suffered minor injuries. Three others survived unscathed.

Man Receives Dollar Message From Iowa Friend

A local relief official in Iowa sent a dollar to W. D. Jenkins after he helped a transient man in fall to buy groceries. Jenkins, who could not supply funds to transients, accompanied the man to E. H. Jones Grocery and lent him a dollar with a promise of repayment. He found the gift in his letter Monday, restoring faith in fellow citizens.

Cage Tourney Opens At Dublin High For Local Schools

About twenty schools from up to six counties join a boys and girls basketball tournament in the Dublin High School gym Friday and Saturday January 1 and 5. Brazos plan eyed for dam on Leon River site

W P Hallmark, rep for Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation Board, reports a possible 9000 acre lake between Dublin and Comanche. The site could become a small dam if the Brazos program gains federal loan support, with the Leon River Savannah outlet above Comanche as a candidate.
