Early Comanche Churches in 1850s History Review

L B Russell recounts early Methodist and Baptist church formation in Comanche County. The 1850s saw the first weatherboard chapel built about 1858 near the present Methodist Church site, with early preachers including Kidd Ferguson and local leaders like Uncle Manse Coker. The first Baptist group formed around 1856 at Tug Gle schoolhouse, with leaders Lider Howard and Elder Bynum, and the town's first Baptist church emerging circa 1864 with members linked to Neely and Montgomery families and the store building that later housed the First National Bank. The present First Baptist church originated in 1874.
