Reconnaissance Flights Soon Under Way Over Camp Bowie Area

RF-4C Phantom II jets from Bergstrom Air Force Base near Austin will start night reconnaissance flights over the old Camp Bowie range south of Brownwood this week. Flights will use airborne photoflash cartridges giving a four thousandth of a second burst of light with 260 million candlepower.

Night-time aerial flash tests shift to Camp Bowie range

The flash used for night photography from the air now operates at Camp Bowie range. Previous eastern sites were avoided due to long distances to Fort Polk, crowded Fort Hood airspace, and cranes migrating to Matagorda Island from October to May. Aircraft will use the range Monday through Thursday between 6 and 9 p.m.
