Roads Suffer as Result of Rates Too High
Washington February 3 Clyde M Reed chairman of the Kansas Utilities commission testified in the Interstate Commerce Commission transportation charges inquiry. He said general passenger rates should be 3 cents per mile with the Pullman rate at 3.6 cents per mile and that travel per car mile fell 20 percent under the new rates. He cited reduced traveling salesmen, stronger automobile competition, and restricted tourist travel as effects while railroads cannot cut expenses and must maintain service. He urged lowering rates to stimulate passenger travel.
