New Texas License Renewal System Expands 12 Month Schedule

Texas moves to a new plate renewal system distributing renewal dates over 12 months. About 11 million notices are being mailed to motor vehicle owners with vehicle numbers used to determine renewal month. County tax offices can start processing renewals early and owners are urged to bring notices to register promptly after Christmas.

Second Long Holiday Period Begins Friday

Comanche observes a second long holiday weekend starting Friday afternoon for New Year. Most local businesses take Monday off. Comanche school reopens Tuesday January 3 after the Christmas New Year break. DPS notes 32 traffic deaths over Christmas weekend on Texas roads. Traffic safety urged during the New Year period.

Peace Officers Give $1700 To Eight Groups

Comanche County Peace Officers Association distributed 1700 in checks to eight organizations Friday from ticket sales of a Gospel music program held September 20. Sheriff W G (Shilo) Garman presented the gifts, including 100 to each of the Comanche De Leon Gustine and Proctor Volunteer Fire Departments and 100 to the Comanche County Heart Association, Comanche County Historical Association, Friends of Retarded Citizens and the American Cancer Society County Unit.

American Agriculture Meeting Friday Night by J. W. Sadberry

American Agriculture will meet in the De Leon City Hall Friday December 30 at 7 p.m. All farmers urged to attend. An out of town speaker will answer questions and help formulate a plan with the national movement. Other area meetings are planned for Hico Cross Plains and Merkel.

TP&L Seeks 18.4 Percent Rate Increase

Texas Power and Light filed with Comanche City Council and the Public Utility Commission a request for an overall average revenue adjustment of 18.4 percent, expected to raise general revenues by 118 million. Residential bills would rise about 8.88 dollars monthly for 11 012 kWh annually, while lignite use and new units drive fuel diversification and future savings.

Rehearing Sought On Court Ruling In Smith Death Penalty Case

Gatesville DA Bob Cummings filed a motion for rehearing with the State Court of Criminal Appeals after the appeals court ordered a new trial for Richard D. Smith of Comanche. The ruling said juror Leon Payne could not be seated because he would not consider a life sentence. The murder trial occurred in Gatesville in August 1976 for the April knife slaying of Travis Durham. Smith remains on death row at Huntsville.

State and Local Government Cost per Capita Rises Across Nation

A national study shows state and local government costs rose to 731 per person, up from 427 in 1970. In Comanche County the per capita tax load is about 430, while Texas average is 581 and the western south central region totals 544. Total taxes collected nationwide reached 156.8 billion, up 10.8 percent from the prior year. Comanche County's total tax load was about 5.418 million.

Peace Officers Report Quiet Christmas in Comanche County

Comanche County peace officers reported a calm Christmas period with only one minor motor vehicle collision between Friday night and Monday midnight. Traffic was heavy but orderly, speeders fewer than usual, and calls to city, sheriff, and county police were down with no major complaints. Officers warned about the upcoming second long holiday period starting Friday.
