One of the 7th Armored Division's top rifle marksmen, 1st Lt. William L. Bassham, will leave Camp Chaffee this week for duty in the Far East. He commands Company A, 81st Medium Tank Battalion and has served as post rifle commander.

Rifle team captain helps build competition at Camp Chaffee
Lieutenant Bassham led rifle teams at Camp Chaffee starting in 1951, creating organized participation where none existed. He starred in the 1953 Camp Chaffee Arkansas State Big Bore Rifle Championship with first and second places, and took top honors at the Fourth Army meet. He won the 1000-yard Leach Cup in 1953 and rapid fire in the 1954 Fourth Army matches, earning the Distinguished Rifleman badge. He aims to continue overseas and hopes to join the Far East rifle team in 1954 for the National Rifle Association event.
