First Christmas Card Origins And Early Ventures

The oldest card seen as a Christmas greeting traces to 1843 England with J Horsley and Sir Henry Cole though its central toast scene drew temperance objections. Earlier, the New York Historical Society circulated a St Nicholas woodcut with Dutch and English verses. A 1842 Philadelphia broadside by John M Wolff reproduced Moore’s Visit of St Nicholas with a Merry Christmas greeting. The first commercial Christmas card emerged in 1863 in England via Punch artist C H Bennett.
