Chiefs lead a host of Indians into Comanche for the First Round-Up in two days of frontier celebration. Elders recall past struggles with pioneer settlers as red men camp and prepare for a war game amusement that brings thousands of Pale faces to town.
A Thursday morning blaze at 2 o’clock destroyed the H Caddell Grocery and Lee Holland Meat Market in De Leon with their buildings and contents. The fire caused excitement as it threatened much of the business district, and the grocery had recently been bought by H Caddell after formerly being Lieyd Grocery.
Gustine’s cotton season opens with two first bales. Dave Smart delivered a bale to the Huey Gin at 11 30 Friday August 24. Shortly after G D Heard brought in another bale to the Duke Gin.
Three men were jailed on burglary charges after an Ed Stone Mercantile Co. theft in Proctor on Friday night. Police traced a car to Gustine where the stolen dry goods groceries shoes and gasoline were found. Bonds were set at 1000 for Red Ifney Leslie Allen and J D Allen with charges including receiving and concealing stolen property.
The Bill Hames Carnival Company opened its shows to the public Tuesday evening drawing good crowds. Rides confessions and side shows entertain both children and adults. The grounds were thronged across afternoons and evenings as the carnival, directed by capable managers, gains prominence in the state.
W G Barrett states the Comanche City Schools start Monday September 8 with a high school program at 9 oclock featuring local speakers and new faculty members. Grammar School also schedules a 9 oclock formal program. West Ward will enroll and organize at 9 oclock. Public invited to both High and Grammar School openings.
Mrs. B. R. W. Stoddard of Ramona California is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Mart Sullivan.
Booger Red touts 15 Brahama steers and a wild brown horse named Comanche for a Texas rodeo. Five dollars per rider to go sixty feet, with many Fat Stock Show veterans in attendance, but Roover Red predicts the riding will thrill audiences and may exceed past Fat Stock Show stunts.
Moody becomes agent for Magnolia Petroleum Company at Comanche succeeding A. J. Blevins who represented them seven years. Moody is well known among Comanche people. Blevins has not announced future plans.
A warrant was issued in Justice J. P. Graham's Court charging R. J. Burdette with assault and attempt to murder after a morning dispute with Will Goosby over cattle. Goosby sustained serious wounds to the face back and side and was treated in Comanche. Also noted are students returning from UT summer school in Austin and John Tarleton.
Comanche County Laymen's Association and many residents plan to attend the Hogg Revival in Cisco on Thursday evening designated as Comanche County night. Those able to travel are asked to meet at 5 on the public square by the band stand to march in a group, with others joining at Cisco. The revival, per a letter from Rev. S. J. T. Williams, is set to begin Sunday evening with seven Cisco churches cooperating.
Hunting is now allowed at Lake Eanes for permit holders. City Secretary C. M. Moore says licenses are $2.00 and valid until August 31 1929, obtainable at City Hall. A family fishing license costs five dollars, also valid until August 1929, extending fishing privileges to any family member.
Comanche opens six doors for a record crowd today as the 7th anniversary of the city’s founding is marked. A 10 am parade on the public square leads a day of frontier life pageants at the ball park arena at 2:30 pm and a street dance with a full orchestra follows.
Keen interest in the commissioner races, particularly in the eastern county, drew a Saturday vote nearly as large as the first. Continued on last page.
Comyn, the county's first town fair, announces its Sept 14 event with officers led by President Co S Dry and Secretary Pearl Sloan. Departments include Field Crops, Livestock, Textiles, Poultry, with program committees arranging band concerts exhibits judging and prize announcements. Everyone is invited to participate and help make a bigger, better fair.
