H Ladd Leaves for Leon Springs

Henry Hoxie Ladd departed Wednesday for Leon Springs to begin the officers training camp second school. The selection honors him as among the ablest men chosen after eliminations to ensure capable trainees. Mr. Ladd has previous service and recognition for ability.

Hog injures Jim Carter at Higginbotham's barns

Jim Carter was seriously hurt while unloading a hog with long tusks at Higginbotham's barns. As Carter untied the hog it surged forward and tusks pierced nearly through his calf. The hog did not intend to fight and Carter was reported resting well with hopes of a quick recovery.

Comanche County Preacher Takes Bond in Objection Sermons Case

Rev. E. G. Thomas of De Leon waived examining trial and posted a $1000 bond with two bondsmen after being charged by complaint with opposing enlistments in sermons. He said a warrant was issued and he came in. he denied the charge and will appear before the November Federal grand jury. The 55-year-old preacher has led revivals near De Leon for weeks and is a well known local figure.

Payne and Edwards Ship 30,000 Lb Melon Car to San Angelo

J B Payne and G D Edwards loaded and shipped a car containing 30 000 pounds of Tom Watson melons to San Angelo. The fruit came from a three acre patch owned by Payne and Edwards, with 17000 pounds supplied by Edwards and 13000 by Payne, averaging 31 pounds per melon. Payne, a pioneer in Comanche county melon shipping, notes a 52 pound exemplar, and says the 31 pound average beats earlier expectations as profitable fruit.

Comanche Lawyers Provide Free Draft Aid to Men

Comanche lawyers offered free legal advice and filled out draft forms for drafted men during a five day examination. Newspapers, physicians, and other agencies supported the effort, with lawyers on a ten hour day schedule to handle the workload.
