Delegates Seek Completion of Highway 36 to Freeport

Hamilton County residents vote to keep the county dry by 91 votes while Hamilton town approves beer sales 269 to 333 and county totals run 797 for and 888 against. Over 300 Highway 36 delegates met in Hamilton to plan a push to finish the road from Abilene to Freeport and to send reps to Austin to confer with the State Highway Commission. Mrs Phil Bertram of Gustine named Mother of Highway 36 for steering the meeting and noting her ancestral ties to the Declaration of Independence signer from Mexico.

Comanche High opens 1937 football season Aug 16

Comanche High School plans 30 players for first practice Monday August 16 under Coach Glenn Frazier with eight lettermen returning. The Indians aim for their first district title since 1931 in the Class A district with Stephenville in the mix. Co captains Egbert Pate and Eddie Jones lead a backfield built around Carnes Wetzel and Pate as shifts for Jones or Bear may occur.

De Leon Hosts Record Watermelon and Peach Festival

More than 10 000 people attended the De Leon festival with 6000 on hand Saturday as over 1200 melons were sliced. Exhibits credited to the county promoted the fruit belt, with booths from Cee tie Bowman and Oliver’s and nurseries from Wolfe and Fitzgerald drawing wide attention.

Short Course Dates Cancelled By Fear Of Infantile Paralysis

County Agent N. E. Scudder reports the Farmers Short Course at A and M College is canceled this year. The decision follows an epidemic of infantile paralysis across the state, though no cases are at the college. Authorities advised against large gatherings to prevent wider spread.

The Comanche Board of Trustees reports busy weeks as it readies for the new school year. New buses are funded Elmer Isham wins Mercer Creek line and Fairview Cross Roads buses are upgraded. Football field is lit and the gym project awaits federal funds. Highway 36 West Opens New Street Through The City

Work on the Highway 36 Extension West through Comanche began this week under WPA supervision led by project superintendent Robbie Stouch. The project connects Temple to Abilene, enters at Hamilton intersection, and proceeds toward the Brownwood highway near the Will Schwartz residence, with gravel dumping and paving planned soon. Thirty six WPA workers are on site. West Spivey and daughter from Port Arthur visited Sheriff Wid Spivey. it was Mr Spivey’s first Comanche trip in 23 years.

John Duncan of Local Land Fame Dies at 99

Colsumbus Tex Aug 7 John Duncan 99 Confederate veteran and oldest UNC alumnus died Friday at his home. He owned much land around Comanche and helped shape area abstracts and deeds. Survived by wife Inda Green of Columbus. Born July 31 1838 on his father’s plantation in Matagorda County.

Ten Day Window For Back Tax Partial Payment Plan

The county offers a ten day window to start paying back taxes under a partial plan with an initial payment due between August 21 and September 1. Payments can be arranged at the Tax Collector's office before August 1, and a Fort Worth firm will collect delinquent taxes not paid or not arranged for payment after September 3, taking a commission off totals. Early payment by the first of next month promises savings for delinquent taxpayers.

Peanut Farmers Attend Meeting in Eastland County

Forty five peanut farmers from Comanche Brown Calahan Eastland and Erath counties met in Eastland on Thursday August fifth to discuss marketing conditions and plan cooperation with Federal agencies for a more equitable grower price. Comanche County Leads Texas Watermelon Shipments

Comanche County emerges as Parker County's main rival in watermelons with strong demand from truckers across Texas New Mexico and beyond. De Leon ships many pounds daily while melons fetch twenty five to forty five cents per hundred pounds. The Black Diamond variety dominates with heavy output and Georgia Sweets Irish poet and melons also grown successfully.

Softball crowds fill Comanche opening night and week

Large crowds attend Comanche inaugural night softball at 8 pm at Comanche Ball Park. Biggs leads with 21 to 5 over Fagans. Woodmen 22 18 vs Gustine All-Stars. Week shows high scoring games and home runs by Polston Carnes and Kirkland as local teams face German All-Stars Dudleys and Higginbothams.
