Prickly Pears Pose Problem for Texas Rangeland
County Agent Floyd M. Key notes prickly pear infestation threatens roughly 75 million acres, with rapid spread from brush removal and trampling. A light infestation can grow to 5,000 plants, making land unusable in three to five years. Some ranchers use it for emergency winter feed, though it is poor to fair roughage. Best control comes from bruising plants then applying herbicide.
