Paris reports German use of asphyxiating bombs along a three mile front near Ypres. Fumes, largely chlorful, caused breathing trouble two miles behind the French trenches. The delay allowed French counter attacks to retake much ground before the bayonet assault drove them back.

London reports two additional neutral ships sunk by German submarines the Norwegian barks Oscar and Basta. Crews bound for England were landed at Burnt Island after the submarines boarded them and gave ten minutes to gather belongings before destroying the vessels.
