Legislature Ends in Deadlock Over Roads and Reapportionment

The 12th Washington Legislature ends in a bitter stalemate over good roads and reapportionment. The McNeely bill allows counties to build roads with state guidance. state funds are limited. Major measures passed include initiative and referendum, recall, workmen’s compensation, eight hour for women, utilities control, and a ministerial temple of justice funding.

Diman Found Guilty in Mail Fraud Trial

Seattle businessman Clarence D. Hillman, a millionaire townsite promoter, was found guilty by a federal jury on 13 counts of using the mails to defraud. Each count carries up to five years in prison and a $1,000 fine, totaling as much as 65 years and $13,000.

Railroads Give 10 Percent Pay Rise to Dispatchers

Spokane reports a 10 percent wage increase for dispatchers roadmasters and trainmasters on the Northern Pacific and Spokane Portland & Seattle railroads effective March 1. Over 100 Spokane workers are affected now with more to follow as other lines grant the raise. North Yakima will host a welcome for the North Coast line on March 22 with 250 Walla Wallans joining officials from Spokane for the ceremony.

Bridge Will Benefit Woodland District

Woodland residents and Clark County neighbors welcome the Lewis River bridge approved by the state Legislature. The span will aid north south travel from Puget Sound to Portland Southern Oregon and California, boosting regional interests and overland connections.

Old Guard Defeated in Seattle Council Election
